Pierced, the top drill, the drill - what does it mean?

In connection with the gemstones, you may encounter these three concepts, but what does the top drill, the drill and pierced really mean? Here in the guide we will explain the different types and show how to use them when making your own jewelry!

No matter what type of pearl you work with, it is good to know the technique 8-numbers, as it is used in many cases for jewelry making. You can learn the technique here!

Pierced pearls is the classic type where a hole is drilled all the way through the pearl. You can use a pearl stick or a piece of wire if the pearl is part of a larger chain to make 8's. You can also easily put this pearl on a leash and use it in bracelets, necklaces, etc.

Top bored pearls is also drilled throughout, but the hole is located at the top of the pearl. To turn this over into a pendant, use wire and make an 8. A top drilled pearl will hang like a drop and is therefore used more often as pendants than as pearls for necklaces, bracelets, etc. Our Swarovski crystals are an example of top bored pearls-you can see our selection of them here!

Prayed pearls Is, unlike the other two types, not drilled throughout. The hole is only "drilled", typically a few millimeters into the stone. You can therefore neither use them on a leash or with a pearl stick. The hole size of pierced beads can vary greatly, so it is important to find the right thickness wire when working with this type of pearl. You use a pin that is fastened with glue in the pearl hole and then it can be used as a pendant.

Good pleasure!
